The story follows Coco, a kind and hardworking girl who lives in a small village and helps her mother as a dressmaker. Coco has always loved magic, but in her world, everyone believes you must be born a witch to use it.
One day, a traveling witch named Qifrey visits her shop. Coco accidentally spies on him while he is working and discovers the world's biggest secret: Magic isn't an innate talent—it is drawn. Excited, Coco tries to draw a spell herself using an old book she bought as a child. However, because she doesn't understand the rules, the spell goes wrong and turns her mother (and her home) into stone. To save her mother, Coco becomes Qifrey’s apprentice and joins his atelier (a workshop or studio) to learn how to become a real witch.
