Kokuho is a Japanese historical drama film directed by Lee Sang-il and written by Satoko Okudera, based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Shuichi Yoshida. It stars Ryo Yoshizawa, Ryusei Yokohama, Mitsuki Takahata, Shinobu Terajima, Mori Nana, Min Tanaka, and Ken Watanabe. Yoshizawa plays the lead role, Kikuo Tachibana, a yakuza's son who performs as a woman (onnagata) in kabuki. He then adopted by Hanjiro Hanai II (Watanabe Ken) to be his apprentice, while his son, Shunsuke (Ryusei Yokohama), an heir to the Tanbaya-house of kabuki. The two formed a brotherly bond also rivalry to be the best onnagata, and then become the National Treasure/Kokuho. It has grossed over 20 billion yen and become Japan's highest grossing non-animated movie of all time. Kokuho has received multiple awards and nominations, including a Best Make-Up and Hairstyling nomination for the 98th Academy Awards.
