[TURN ON THE CAPTIONS TO SEE THE LYRICS!]
This is the first song I ever wrote German lyrics for. It's about the growing West German surveillance state (which looks downright innocent compared to what we all live with today).
It comes from a January 4, 1990, rehearsal of the Kiel, West Germany, punk band Sergeant Slaughter, held in the basement machine shop of a youth center. Recorded on a primitive 1989 Sony Walkman (portable cassette player) using its built-in microphones.
This version was remastered in July, 2025. The result is still far from perfect, but considering the quality of the source recording, it's a great improvement. You can hear the unremastered version of this song here: https://youtu.be/wHGT25yW-tY
In a fascinating turn of events, this song was _apparently_ plagiarized by B.C.C. & Die Brennenden Hunde, another Kiel band, the difference being that they used the entire first line of the song as the title ("Der realexistierende Rechtsstaat hört mein Telefon ab"). I've gotta say, I feel... flattered! They even put it down on vinyl! *
Nils Tietgen (guitar and vocals), Scott Sadowsky (bass), Ted Fröhlich † (drums).
