Lavalantula (2015)

109 ViewsDec 6, 2024

Synopsis: "Lavalantula" is a campy horror-comedy that combines elements of disaster and creature features. Set in Los Angeles, the film kicks off with a volcanic eruption that releases a swarm of fire-breathing tarantulas onto the city. Chaos ensues as these arachnid predators wreak havoc, incinerating everything in their path. The protagonist, Colton West (played by Steve Guttenberg), a washed-up action movie star, must rise to the occasion and use his Hollywood-honed skills to combat the arachnid menace. With the fate of the city hanging by a thread, Colton rallies his family and a group of misfit allies to locate and destroy the queen spider before her brood overwhelms humanity. Review: "Lavalantula" thrives on its absurd premise, offering viewers a knowingly over-the-top blend of horror and comedy. Directed by Mike Mendez, known for his knack for tongue-in-cheek horror, the film doesn’t take itself too seriously and leans heavily into its B-movie roots. The script is peppered with humorous nods to disaster movies and Hollywood clichés, particularly through Guttenberg’s portrayal of a washed-up star mirroring his own 1980s heyday. While the visual effects are cheesy and far from blockbuster quality, they serve the film’s self-aware tone. Fans of Syfy's similarly styled Sharknado franchise will appreciate the schlocky CGI and outrageous set pieces. The supporting cast, including familiar faces from Police Academy, adds a nostalgic layer for fans of 1980s comedies. However, the pacing can feel uneven, and the film occasionally drags in its attempts to juggle character development and spider-fueled carnage. Ultimately, Lavalantula is best enjoyed as a guilty pleasure—an unabashedly silly creature feature that knows its audience and delivers laughs, shrieks, and plenty of spider-induced mayhem. Sequel: The movie spawned a sequel titled 2 Lava 2 Lantula! in 2016, which continues the outrageous escapades of Colton West.
