Shendu was one of eight demon siblings, each of them controlling an element of nature, with Shendu's being Fire, and the others being Sky, Moon, Thunder, Earth, Mountain, Wind and Water. Each demon was defeated by one of the eight ancient immortals and sealed into a parallel dimension. The doors to this dimension were in turn locked, with this locking magic being focused in the Pan'ku Box. Uncle explains that this box is the only thing that can locate and open these portals.
