Rei Kiriyama is confronted with obstacles both on and off the shogi board in his second year of high school. Despite his feelings of isolation, he is gradually coming out of his shell and forming connections with the lively individuals he encounters in the shogi hall, school club, and community. The Kawamoto sisters - Akari, Hinata, and Momo - become a source of familial love and encouragement for Rei. This aids him in understanding that everyone is dealing with their own emotional issues and he learns how to depend on and support others. However, Rei's shogi profession remains challenging. Tournaments, championships, and title matches all add to the mounting pressure as he rises up the ranks and encounters fierce competitors. Reigning in his relationships with those close to him and discovering passion in the game continue to be a challenge for Rei as he steers his way through the complex and competitive shogi world.
