On October 29, Neuralink shared new data: participants with ALS (the disease Stephen Hawking had) speak through the implant — thoughts become text and voice. One participant reached 75 words a minute in the very first week, with a 5.8% error rate on a 125,000-word vocabulary.
What already exists, according to Neuralink:
• Terry first silently mouthed the words, then simply thought them — and heard his old voice (the VOICE trial);
• the first patient, Noland Arbaugh, played chess and Civilization with his mind in 2024;
• participants control a robotic arm (feeding themselves) and a power wheelchair with their thoughts;
• 21 people in the trials (January 2026), more than 50,000 implant hours (October 2026).
What Musk promises (Summer Update, June 2025): Blindsight will restore sight even to people born blind, and later let them see in infrared and ultraviolet; you could even «inhabit» an Optimus robot. The company plans the first Blindsight patient in 2026 — there's no official news of the surgery yet.
Important: these are clinical trials; Neuralink devices are not FDA-approved.
My forecast: in 3–5 years, implants like this will give speech back to thousands of people, and in 10 we'll type with our minds faster than with our fingers.
