The Eight Worldly Winds: A Mind That Doesn't Sway With the World | Dharma in Real Life, Lesson 4
📝 Description:
All our lives we're blown about by eight winds in four pairs: gain and loss, fame and obscurity, praise and blame, pleasure and pain. Not even the Buddha escaped them. He was honored by kings, falsely accused in front of a crowd, and once came back from the alms round with an empty bowl. The pleasant winds cause suffering too, like honey smeared on a razor's edge. In this lesson we learn from the story of the insult the Buddha 'didn't accept,' like food a guest refuses. We cover five ways to train with the winds, and how to find the place deep inside that no wind can reach. Includes a guided 'mountain of rock' meditation.
💡 The idea to keep with you:
The wind never stops blowing. But the mountain doesn't have to sway.
✅ Try this today:
This morning, tell yourself: today I may gain or lose, be praised or blamed, feel pleasure or pain. This is the nature of the world. When you're criticized, remember the food the guest refused, and ask whether there's any truth you can learn from. Whatever isn't true, you don't have to accept.
