Saint Bruno Feast Day

“In the Silence of the Cell” is a devotional hymn celebrating Saint Bruno, priest, scholar, founder of the Carthusian Order, and one of the great witnesses to the beauty of silence, solitude and contemplative prayer. Born in Cologne and educated at the prestigious cathedral school of Rheims, Bruno became known for his intelligence, teaching ability and leadership. He held important positions in the Church and was eventually made chancellor of the Archdiocese of Rheims. But the higher Bruno rose in worldly esteem, the more clearly he sensed another calling. He did not seek an episcopal throne or greater ecclesiastical prestige. Instead, he chose a hidden life dedicated to God. With six companions, Bruno travelled into the mountains of Chartreuse, where they established a collection of hermitages devoted to prayer, study and manual work. This became the beginning of the Carthusian Order. Their vocation was unlike ordinary monastic life. The Carthusians combined solitude with communion. Each monk lived largely alone in his own hermitage, spending long periods in silence, prayer and spiritual reading, while gathering at the monastery church for the Divine Office and Eucharistic worship. Bruno described his life in Calabria as being “far removed from habitation,” with a small group of brothers keeping watch for God. The heart of the Carthusian vocation is beautifully expressed in the idea of the cell as holy ground—a place where God and the soul meet in a relationship of friendship. Bruno's peaceful solitude was interrupted when Pope Urban II, his former student, called him to Rome to serve as a trusted adviser during a period of political and ecclesial turmoil. Bruno obeyed, even though he deeply preferred the hidden life. When circumstances allowed, he returned to solitude and established another hermitage in Calabria, where he spent the final years of his life.
