In her first year in Copenhagen, Claire counted her messages one Tuesday: exactly fifty, all in Danish, every one of them written, deleted and written again, so good that her colleague Signe said they were better than her own. Then came the Monday meeting, standing round a tall table by the coffee machine. Claire was the only person who knew why the new bicycle light was late, and while she built the perfect sentence in her head, the room moved on to the Christmas party. Her manager, Henrik, smiled and said: Claire, I can see the typing dots. She said no, nothing, and four minutes later sent the explanation in the chat, where Henrik replied: why did you not say this in the meeting? This episode is about why writing well can keep you silent: text trains you to send finished packages and to wait for an invitation, and a meeting gives you neither. You get fifteen short lines in four families: saying version one out loud, making the typing dots audible, pressing backspace with words, and taking a turn that nobody hands you.
THE 15 LINES IN THIS EPISODE
- "Off the top of my head."
- "Just a first thought."
- "I have half an idea here."
- "Don't quote me on this."
- "Stay with me on this."
- "Let me find the words."
- "I nearly have it."
- ...and 8 more, all said out loud in the episode.
Every one is said slowly, repeated more than once, and then used in a real situation, so you can say it out loud with us instead of only recognizing it.
The Fluency Plateau is for people who already understand English but freeze when it is time to speak. Each episode takes one exact moment where you get stuck and hands you the lines that get you past it.
SPEAKING CHALLENGE
What's one thing you typed this week that you never said out loud? Say your answer out loud before you write it.
