Kuntilanak, a thousand-year-old Indonesian vengeful spirit who died in childbirth, has been trapped in the cemetery forest of West Kalimantan. The only living person who can see her is the young girl Ayu, who brings her clothes and removes the iron nail sealing her power—becoming her only light in centuries of solitude. Ayu grows up, marries, and is beaten to death by her demon husband Danawa. Her two young daughters drag her body into the graveyard, where Kuntilanak finds them. Kuntilanak resurrects Ayu’s body, raises the two children as her own, and secretly punishes all wifebeating men in the village. But when the witch Dutun is summoned to exorcise the “demon,” the villagers’ fear and ignorance drive Kuntilanak to the brink of destruction. As the iron nail hovers over her head once more, she realizes—the real monster was never her.
