WHY ARE WE SO HOOKED ON RED FLAGS? đ©đ©đ©
Sometimes, the hardest person to let go of isnât the one who treats us bestâit's the one who keeps us guessing.
When someone is warm one moment and distant the next, the unpredictability can create a powerful cycle:
â€ïž Attention â â Uncertainty â đ Waiting â â€ïž Attention again
This pattern is related to what psychologists call intermittent reinforcementâwhen something rewarding happens unpredictably. Because you donât know when the next rewarding moment will happen, you may find yourself checking, waiting, overthinking, and hoping for that next moment of connection.
And sometimes, that emotional roller coaster can feel like chemistry.
But here's the important distinction:
⥠Intensity isn't automatically intimacy.
Butterflies can come from excitementâbut sometimes anxiety can feel like butterflies too. A relationship that feels intense isn't necessarily emotionally safe, consistent, or secure.
So instead of only asking:
âWhy can't I let them go?â
Try asking:
âWhat am I actually holding on to?â
Is it the person?
The connection?
The potential?
Or the reassurance you keep hoping they'll give you?
There isn't one psychological explanation for why someone stays in a difficult relationship. Attachment experiences, emotional needs, self-esteem, past experiences, and relationship dynamics can all play a role.
The goal isn't to judge yourself for staying.
The goal is to understand the pattern. đ§
