Did Persia Really Use Cats to Conquer Egypt?

In 525 BC, the Persian king Cambyses II invaded Egypt and confronted the Egyptian army at Pelusium. The battle was real, the Persian victory was real, and Egypt eventually became part of the Persian Empire. But centuries later, a much stranger story appeared. According to the later Greek writer Polyaenus, Cambyses supposedly placed sacred animals — including dogs, sheep, ibises, and cats — in front of his army during the attack. The idea was simple: if Egyptian soldiers considered these animals sacred, attacking the Persian forces could mean risking harm to creatures they deeply respected. But did this actually happen? The Persian conquest of Egypt is well established. The Battle of Pelusium is also part of the historical record. The problem is the cats. Polyaenus wrote centuries after the battle, while the earlier historian Herodotus described the Persian conquest without mentioning Cambyses using cats at Pelusium. That does not automatically make the story false. But it means the famous cat tactic cannot be treated as proven fact. What survives is a fascinating story somewhere between history and legend — one that raises an even bigger question: could understanding an enemy's beliefs sometimes be as powerful as superior weapons?
