Claire went into a small print shop in Birmingham on a Saturday morning with two hundred flyers to order and the file already open on her phone. It should have taken thirty seconds. It took eleven minutes, she paid for two hundred copies in the wrong size, and she never once finished a sentence: the woman behind the counter came in after about four words, every single time, and finished it wrong. Nobody was rude. The woman was warm, fast, and on her fortieth customer of the day. Then Claire stood in the doorway putting her coat on and watched the next man in the queue get interrupted at exactly the same point, say six flat words back, and get the whole three minutes of service she had just failed to get. This episode is about those six words and fourteen more like them: what to say when the difficult person cuts you off, waves your point away, asks three things at once, or says your name in front of a room. Four kinds of difficult person, fifteen short lines, every one of them under seven words.
THE 15 LINES IN THIS EPISODE
- "Let me finish that thought."
- "One more sentence and it's yours."
- "Hold that, I'm nearly there."
- "Can I land this first?"
- "I see it differently."
- "That's not my experience."
- "What makes you say that?"
- ...and 8 more, all said out loud in the episode.
Every one is said slowly, repeated more than once, and then used in a real situation, so you can say it out loud with us instead of only recognizing it.
The Fluency Plateau is for people who already understand English but freeze when it is time to speak. Each episode takes one exact moment where you get stuck and hands you the lines that get you past it.
SPEAKING CHALLENGE
Who's your difficult person, and which line are you taking? Say your answer out loud before you write it.
