Claire was given a cheap smart watch for Christmas and only wore it to be polite. In the third week of January it buzzed in the middle of a meeting: high heart rate, one hundred and twenty one, while inactive. She was sitting still with her hands in her lap, listening to a colleague finish a report, and she decided the watch was broken. It was not. The graph showed the climb starting at seven minutes past two, while her colleague still had half a sentence left, and she froze at nine minutes past two. Two full minutes of warning that she read as a verdict instead of a signal. This episode is about those two minutes: your body starts the freeze before your mouth does, it starts it early, and the same activation arrives before good news. Four moments, and fifteen phrases for the seconds before you speak instead of the silence after you failed.
THE 15 PHRASES IN THIS EPISODE
- "That's my body, not my English."
- "Let me get in early on this one."
- "I felt that coming, so I'm going now."
- "That question went straight to my chest."
- "I'm nervous, and I still have an answer."
- "My hands always do this, ignore them."
- "I'm starting anyway, shaking and all."
- "I'm going to answer before I'm ready."
- "Rough version first, tidy version after."
- ...and 6 more, all said out loud in the episode.
Every one is said slowly, repeated more than once, and then used in a real situation, so you can say it out loud with us instead of only recognizing it.
The Fluency Plateau is for people who already understand English but freeze when it is time to speak. Each episode takes one exact moment where you get stuck and hands you the phrases that get you past it.
SPEAKING CHALLENGE
Where does yours start, and how early does it arrive? Say your answer out loud before you write it.
