She Killed Her Three Children. The Question Is Why. | Lindsay Clancy

On January 24, 2023, Lindsay Clancy was a 32-year-old nurse and mother of three living with her husband and children in Duxbury, Massachusetts. By the end of that night, her children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan — had lost their lives. There was little mystery about who was responsible. Lindsay Clancy was accused of killing all three children. But the question at the centre of the case became far more complicated: Why did it happen — and was Lindsay legally responsible for her actions? In the months before the tragedy, Clancy had reportedly been struggling with her mental health following childbirth and had received treatment and multiple medications. Her defence would argue that she was suffering from severe mental illness, including postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors, however, presented a very different interpretation of her actions and state of mind. The case would ultimately force a courtroom to confront an extraordinarily difficult question: Was this the calculated act of a mother who understood exactly what she was doing, or the actions of someone experiencing a profound psychiatric crisis? In this episode of Evidence Bag Stories, we examine the events leading up to January 24, the timeline of that night, Lindsay's mental-health treatment, the evidence presented by both sides, and the arguments that have made the case one of the most debated criminal trials in America. This documentary discusses the deaths of children and mental illness. Viewer discretion is advised. Mental illness and postpartum psychiatric conditions should not be equated with violence; the video examines the specific evidence and legal arguments presented in this individual case.
