The Ahom Kingdom was one of the longest-lasting kingdoms in the history of the Indian subcontinent.
Founded in 1228 by Sukaphaa, a Tai prince who entered the Brahmaputra Valley, the Ahom state gradually transformed into a powerful kingdom in what is now Assam, northeastern India.
For nearly 600 years, the Ahoms built a sophisticated political system, expanded their territory, developed distinctive military traditions, and successfully resisted repeated attempts by the Mughal Empire to conquer their kingdom.
One of the most famous chapters came during the 17th century, when the Ahoms and the Mughals fought for control of the Brahmaputra Valley. The conflict culminated in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where the Ahom forces under Lachit Borphukan defeated a much larger Mughal expedition.
But the Ahom story is about much more than one battle.
In this documentary, we explore:
• Who were the Ahoms?
• Where did the Tai-Ahom people come from?
• How did Sukaphaa establish the Ahom Kingdom?
• How did the Ahoms build a powerful state in Assam?
• Why did the Mughals repeatedly try to conquer Assam?
• How did Ahom military strategy work?
• What happened at the Battle of Saraighat?
• Who was Lachit Borphukan?
• Why did the Ahom Kingdom survive for almost six centuries?
• How did Ahom culture and Assamese society evolve?
The Ahom Kingdom is one of the most remarkable examples of a regional power successfully resisting one of the most powerful empires of early modern South Asia.
This is the story of the Ahoms — a Tai people who built a powerful kingdom in the Brahmaputra Valley and left a lasting mark on the history of India.
