Search. Gmail. Maps. YouTube. Free. Free. Free. Free. So who pays for all of this?
Google looks like the worst shop in town — until you open the door behind the free shelf. Most of the money comes from advertising: businesses bid to reach you when you search and when you watch. The auction is not only "highest cash wins" — relevance and quality matter too.
Google is bigger than Search. YouTube ads and subscriptions are a giant till. Google Cloud rents computers to companies. Alphabet's 2025 revenue was about $403 billion — Search ads still the biggest slice, Cloud growing fast.
Running the free store is expensive: data centers, electricity, people, AI infrastructure. Free for you does not mean free to run.
