Esther Blodgett (Janet Gaynor), a young woman aspiring to be an actress, travels to Hollywood, finds work as a waitress, and meets a once-famous actor (Fredric March) whose career is fading due to his alcoholism. They begin a relationship. He recognizes her immense talent and is determined to make her a new singing star, introducing her to the world of film musicals. They marry, and as her career rises and she becomes a true star, he slowly self-destructs.
