The conflict between the CPI(M) and the CPI within the LDF is intensifying over the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the State Legislative Assembly. The new political dispute erupted after the CPI, which held the second position during the decade-long LDF rule, demanded its due prominence in the opposition.
This crucial move by the CPI comes against the backdrop of an electoral setback that reduced the LDF's strength to just 35 seats in the 140-member Assembly. The CPI argues that collective leadership is essential for a strong political comeback for the Left, and therefore, the post of Deputy Leader of the Opposition should be allotted to them. However, CPI(M) State Secretariat member C.N. Mohanan hit back through the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, stating that ever since the front was formed in 1980, the CPI(M) has held both the Leader and Deputy Leader of Opposition posts whenever they were in the opposition, and warned against fracturing Left unity with new claims. Currently, out of the 35 members on the opposition benches, 26 MLAs belong to the CPI(M) and 8 belong to the CPI.
