What was haircare really like in 1811—before shampoo, conditioner and modern hair masks?
In this video, I follow an early 1800s haircare routine while following a recipe book published in 1811. How can I wash and care for my hair without using soap? Using warm water and historically appropriate methods, I explore how women might have kept their hair clean, soft, and presentable in the early 19th century.
How clean can you get your hair without soap? And what did people actually do to care for their hair before modern shampoo?
