Singapore is 75% ethnic Chinese, but only about a third of Chinese households still speak Mandarin at home. How? It wasn't an accident. Singapore didn't wake up and lose its Chinese cultural continuity. It spent decades engineering it. From closing Nanyang University and dismantling the entire Chinese-medium school system, to demoting Mandarin from a language of knowledge and public life to a subordinate "mother tongue" subject - Singapore made English the only gatekeeper to upward mobility, elite status, and national belonging. Now the country is panicking. Its Prime Minister is warning Singapore must preserve its "Asian identity" as the country faces cultural hollowing-out and the arrival of the Asian Century. But you cannot spend generations cutting the civilizational cord and act surprised when the language stops being inherited. When you drain the soul from a civilization and leave behind only an English-speaking post-colonial shell with a Chinese surname, appeals to Asian identity decades later are not a revival.
