Saint Bartholomew Feast Day

Devotional hymn inspired by the story of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, traditionally identified with Nathanael, the man from Cana whose encounter with Jesus is recorded in the Gospel of Saint John. When Philip told Nathanael that he had found Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael initially questioned whether anything good could come from such an insignificant place. Yet Philip gave him the simple invitation: “Come and see.” When Nathanael approached, Jesus immediately revealed that He already knew the man's heart: “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.” Jesus then told Nathanael that He had seen him beneath the fig tree before Philip called him. This deeply personal encounter led Nathanael to one of the earliest great professions of faith: “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” The song explores this remarkable moment of discovery—the movement from doubt to faith, from hearing about Jesus to personally encountering Him. Saint Bartholomew is one of the Twelve Apostles, although the New Testament gives us little information about his later missionary work. Christian tradition has long associated him with missions in distant lands, including traditions connecting him with India, and remembers him as a martyr. His traditional patronage includes leatherworkers, tanners, shoemakers, bookbinders, plasterers and butchers. The central message of the hymn is simple: faith is not merely something we hear from others.
