Mary, Queen of Heaven — Crowned with Twelve Stars

“A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” — Revelation 12:1 This song celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, honoring Mary as Mother of God, Mother of the Church and Queen of Heaven and Earth. Following the Solemnity of the Assumption, the Church celebrates Mary’s Queenship as a natural consequence of her being assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. Her Son, Jesus Christ, is King of Kings, and Mary is honored as His Queen Mother. The imagery of Revelation—a woman clothed with the sun, crowned with twelve stars—has long inspired Christian reflection on Mary's heavenly glory. Mary's devotion has touched generations of Christians. At Lourdes, she identified herself to Saint Bernadette as the Immaculate Conception. At Fátima, the Lady of the Rosary called the world to prayer, conversion and the Rosary. The Church formally instituted the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary in 1954 through Pope Pius XII's Ad Caeli Reginam. In 1969, the feast was moved to August 22, eight days after the Assumption, beautifully linking Mary's Assumption with her heavenly Queenship. Mary's queenship is not about worldly power. She reigns as a mother—close to her Son and close to His children. She points beyond herself to Christ and intercedes for those who seek God's mercy. Like a child running to a loving mother, we can turn to Mary with confidence, asking her prayers and trusting in her maternal care. Hail Mary, Queen of Heaven. Mother of mercy, pray for us.
