The Real Reason New Situations Scare You More Than Old Ones | 35-Minute English Podcast (B2-C1)

Ethan walked into a small cheese shop in Utrecht on a Saturday morning and stood at the counter for eleven minutes without being served. People who came in after him were served before him, repeatedly, and he decided they had clocked him as foreign and were dealing with the locals first. Then he heard a noise behind him and turned around and saw a small red ticket machine on a pillar, about a metre behind his left shoulder, with everybody else in the shop holding a number. He took a ticket, waited four minutes, got to the counter, was asked whether he wanted it cut thick or thin, and froze completely. He left with no cheese and told himself in the street that a year at a desk had cost him the language. On Thursday he went back to the same shop, with the same man behind the same counter, and the whole thing took ninety seconds, using not one new word. This episode is about why a new situation costs you twice: once for the language, which you expected, and once for the sequence, which nobody has ever named for you. Four rounds, fifteen real phrases, none of them vocabulary and all of them about buying the order of things before you need it.
