Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina

“Wounds of Love” is a devotional hymn celebrating Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, the beloved Capuchin friar and priest whose life was marked by prayer, sacrifice, confession, Eucharistic devotion, love for the Blessed Virgin Mary and extraordinary union with the suffering Christ. Born Francesco Forgione in Pietrelcina, Italy, in 1887, Padre Pio entered the Capuchin novitiate at the age of fifteen. Although often in fragile health, he persevered through his formation and was ordained a priest in 1910. His priesthood became a life of intense prayer and service. On September 20, 1918, the wounds of Christ's Passion appeared on his body. Saint Pio became widely known for bearing the stigmata, and people from around the world were drawn to him for confession, spiritual counsel and prayer. For hours each day he heard confessions, helping people confront sin, seek God's mercy and return to the life of grace. Behind the public attention was a deeply hidden spiritual life. Padre Pio's letters reveal years of physical and interior suffering, yet also an extraordinary love for Jesus in the Eucharist and for Our Lady. He repeatedly encouraged people to pray, trust God and remain close to the sacraments. One of his great works was the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza — House for the Relief of Suffering. Padre Pio envisioned it as a place where those suffering in body and soul could encounter compassionate care. The hospital opened in 1956 and became one of the lasting works associated with his ministry. Padre Pio's life reminds us that suffering does not have to be meaningless. United with Christ, suffering can become an offering of love and a path toward deeper union with God. He died on September 23, 1968, in San Giovanni Rotondo after more than fifty years of priestly ministry and sacrifice. More than 100,000 people attended his funeral. His tomb became a place of pilgrimage, and devotion to him spread throughout the Catholic world.
