Birthday Wonderland (バースデー・ワンダーランド), also known internationally as The Wonderland, is a 2019 Japanese fantasy adventure anime film directed by Keiichi Hara and animated by SIGNAL.MD. The film is based on Sachiko Kashiwaba’s children’s novel Chikashitsu kara no Fushigi na Tabi (The Mysterious Journey from the Basement) and was released in Japan on 04/26/2019, with a runtime of 115 minutes.
The story follows Akane, a shy girl who lacks confidence in herself. On the day before her birthday, she visits her aunt Chii’s antique shop to pick up a present. There, she encounters the mysterious alchemist Hippocrates and his apprentice Pipo, who emerge from the shop’s basement and ask her to save their world. They take Akane into a parallel realm known as Wonderland, where she is believed to be the legendary “Goddess of the Green Wind.”
Wonderland is suffering from a serious drought that is causing the land to lose its colors. Reluctantly accepting her role, Akane begins an extraordinary journey through a world filled with fantastical creatures and mysterious landscapes. Along the way, she gradually discovers courage and learns more about herself, turning what begins as an unexpected birthday adventure into a journey of personal growth.
