Ethan was standing on a station platform in the north of England, under a curved tunnel ceiling, with a train braking on the next line and a loudspeaker so bad it sounded underwater. He understood every announcement, every time, without effort. Ten minutes later he sat down in the station cafe, carpeted and quiet, and a man asked him four short words from a metre away. He understood nothing at all. He said sorry, the man repeated it at the same speed and volume, and this time every word landed instantly. The question was, is anyone sitting here.
