What is a Betel Yard?
A Betel Yard (often called a Betel Leaf Garden or Paon Boroj) is a specialized farm or enclosed field created for cultivating betel vines (Piper betle). The leaves are widely grown across South and Southeast Asia for culinary, cultural, and traditional medicinal uses.
Key Vocabulary & Characteristics
Betel Leaf (Paan): The glossy, heart-shaped leaf grown on the vine, commonly chewed with areca nut and slaked lime.
Trellis System: Betel vines are climbing plants. Farmers build tall structures using bamboo poles, wooden sticks, and jute ropes to support the upward growth of the vines.
Shade Canopy: Betel leaves require high humidity and indirect sunlight. The top and sides of the yard are covered with straw, dry grass, or mesh netting to block harsh sunlight and protect the crops from heavy winds.
Narrow Pathways: Betel yards are planted in tight, neat parallel rows separated by thin walking tracks, allowing farmers to easily water, prune, and harvest the leaves by hand.
