In 2007, Maya chose software engineering. Her twin brother Leo chose the family farm. At dinner, Maya became “the future” and Leo became “the past.” Then history changed direction. The Web made office work global and machine-readable. Precision agriculture brought GPS, yield monitors and data into the field. Generative AI accelerated Maya’s tasks and advised Leo—but neither machine could carry responsibility for the consequences. Maya and Leo are fictional composite characters.
