Journey back to the third century and discover the story of **Saint Pontian**, the 18th Pope of the Catholic Church and a courageous shepherd who remained faithful through persecution, exile and suffering.
Pontian served as Bishop of Rome from **230 to 235**, a turbulent period marked by theological controversy and division within the Church. During his pontificate, he worked toward reconciliation with **Hippolytus**, helping bring an end to a long-standing schism.
When persecution erupted under the Emperor Maximinus Thrax, Pontian was banished to the brutal mines of **Sardinia**. Knowing that the Church needed a new shepherd during his absence, he became the first pope known to have **resigned the papacy**, stepping aside so a successor could be elected.
Pontian eventually died from the hardships of exile. His remains were later returned to Rome and buried in the **Catacomb of Callixtus**, where his ancient epitaph was discovered in 1909:
**PONTIANOS, EPISK. MARTUR โ Pontian, Bishop, Martyr.**
His life is a powerful testimony to courage, humility, reconciliation and faithfulness to Christ even in the face of suffering.
๐ **Saint Pontian, faithful shepherd and martyr, pray for us.**
