Dorothy and her companions finally stand before the Wizard in the Emerald Palace. Each pleads for what they lack: Dorothy for a way home, the Scarecrow for a brain, the Tin Woodman for a heart, and the Lion for courage. The Wizard refuses to grant their wishes unless they perform a task for him: they must destroy the Wicked Witch of the West. This command shocks Dorothy, for she is only a child, and her companions are seekers, not warriors. Yet the Wizard insists — only by removing the Witch can their desires be fulfilled.
The Shadow of the Witch
The companions leave the Emerald City, their hearts heavy. The anime frames this as a dangerous but noble quest, while Baum’s novel emphasizes the Witch’s cruelty and power. The Wicked Witch of the West is far more terrifying than her sister: she rules with fear, commands wolves, crows, and winged monkeys, and wields a single, all-powerful eye that sees everything.
Dorothy recalls the Good Witch’s warning — the Witch would seek vengeance for her sister’s death. Now, that vengeance is certain.
The Difficult Choice
Though frightened, Dorothy and her companions resolve to face the Witch. Each clings to their hope: Dorothy to return home, the Scarecrow to gain wisdom, the Tin Woodman to feel love, and the Lion to find courage. Their bond strengthens as they step onto the road once more, knowing that the path ahead leads not to wonder, but to peril.
