Cue 28 - "Death on the Beach" (Score of aborted independent Colombian film)

Cue from the score of an aborted independent Colombian film. Composed, arranged, performed, mixed and mastered by Scott Sadowsky. This was the most difficult cue to compose in the entire film. It accompanies a fight to the death between our heroine and the man she once thought she could control like a puppet, filmed at night on a Cartagena beach. Unfortunately, though very much an action scene, virtually no action is visible due to the almost nonexistent lighting and inadequate camera work - in fact, about the only things that can be seen are the black ocean against a slightly less black horizon with some city lights in the background. So I was commissioned to create a cue that would ideally musically communicate everything that was missing visually. A tall order, indeed. The emotions I went for were chaos, violence, panic, danger and death. Chaos is expressed in many ways, but one of the main ones is through the unpredictable meter structure. The danger and violence begin with the very first note of the cue, played by a growling section of low strings that often scrape and play percussively. A plaintive steel plate that sounds very much like a church bell tolls occasionally, as if foreshadowing the death to come, and a cacophonous cluster swell culminating in instrument body slaps marks the end of the second and third sections of this initial part of the cue. In the fourth and final section of this initial part, the second cello goes wild and plays a mad series of glissandos, while the other strings are played with downright fury. Chaos reigns supreme. The main part starts at 1:07 and only grows in intensity and meaning. From there, the cue grows even more intense, making use of the most varied melodic and percussion instruments, alternately shocking with surprise and reinforcing established rhythms and instruments, climaxing in a massive multi-layered boom. _____ Copyright (c) 2025 by Scott Sadowsky.
