Baba Yaga: Songs and Dances of Death

In Baba Yaga: Songs and Dances of Death, the multifaceted figure of Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga, is given a theatrical new lease of life in a song cycle world premiere by Elena Langer (Welsh National Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony). The programme explores in music and movement, with choreography by Andreas Heise (Salzburg Festival, Norwegian National Ballet, Staatsballet Berlin) themes of darkness, magic and transformation, placing two female archetypes side by side: Baba Yaga, and the Bone Woman in Mussorgsky's masterpiece Songs and Dance of Death. With further music by Antonín Dvořák, Vítězslava Kapralova, Tori Amos and Benjamin Britten.
