Joachim and Anna prayed for years to have a child. The angel Gabriel appeared and told them they would have a daughter, Mary, who would be dedicated to God. Mary was born in Nazareth and taken to the Temple in Jerusalem to be consecrated. She was raised there until she was a teenager. Mary met Joseph at the river, and they were betrothed. The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary again and told her that she would give birth to Jesus. Her pregnancy caused people to mock her, but Joseph supported her and married her. They then went to Bethlehem, where Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable because there was no inn. King Herod, feeling threatened by the news of Jesus' birth, ordered the killing of the babies in Bethlehem. Mary and Joseph fled to Egypt. After escaping Herod's soldiers, they returned to Jerusalem to present Jesus in the Temple.
