š  Pufferfish Fun Facts:
š” They puff up like balloons
When threatened, pufferfish gulp water (or air) to inflate their bodies into a giant ball, making them harder to eat!
š” Theyāre poisonous!
Many pufferfish carry a toxin called tetrodotoxināitās 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide! Just one pufferfish can kill up to 30 adult humans if eaten.
š” They have crazy teeth
Their teeth are fused together into a beak-like structure, perfect for crushing hard shells like clams and crabs.
š” They start tiny
Baby pufferfish are about the size of a peppercorn when they hatch!
š” Theyāre artists
Some species, like the white-spotted pufferfish, make elaborate sand circles on the ocean floor to attract matesābasically underwater crop circles!
š” Not all puffers are dangerous
Some species have little or no poison and are actually a delicacy (like in Japanās famous, risky dish called fugu).
š” Theyāre slow but clever
Pufferfish arenāt fast swimmers, so instead they rely on camouflage, poison, and their inflatable trick to survive.
