Diesel multiple unit Swindon - Cheltenham - Swindon. Amateur home movie Family of Tim Hall in the garden. Swindon works on the Great Western Railway. an early generation diesel multiple unit. Close up of DMU with special American style speed whiskers ( white stripes painted in an arch shape on the front ) . Drivers and inspection crew pose in front of the engine. The train sets off. Railway inspector boards as well. In the drivers cab with close up of the controls. Close up of the yellow signal ( distance caution signal ) in the stop position. Man climbs the stairs to Purton signal box. Close up of a red signal in the stop position then go. Leaving form Purton signal box. Journey point of view from the train's window. Down the main line, with steam passenger train coming in the opposite direction. Pass a maintenance crew on the side of the track. Through the stations and tunnels. Kemble Station. Sapperton tunnel ( which has a gap in the middle due to a collapse during construction, so they left it like that ! ). Though Stroud towards Gloucester where the number of line increases as it is the line between Bristol and Gloucester. Past a goods train and passenger train. Close up of " Cheltenham Spa Station. Malvern Road. " sign and signal box ( which is now abandoned ) on the journey back down towards Swindon. Single line through Cotswold countryside and houses, small station possibly Andoversford, then to Cirencester ( also abandoned ) where the DMU breaks down. Everybody gets out and has a look underneath. South Cerney Station sign where the D.M.U. breaks down again. Steam train passes. Cricklade church in the distance and Cricklade station and signal box. Back to Swindon past Swindon works. DMU has broken down three times and the last shot of this film is a classic of STEAM trains on the GWR opposed to the diesels.
