Introduction.
The manga ‘Sougou no Freelen’ by Yamada Kaneto (original story) and Abetsukasa (artwork) is serialised in ‘Shogakan Shōnen Sunday’ (Shogakukan). Set in a world ‘after’ the overthrow of the Demon King by the heroes and their party, the story follows the journey of Freelen, a wizard who has lived for over a thousand years who overthrew the Demon King together with the heroes, and the new people she meets. The story, with its heartrending drama and dialogue, battles with magic and swords, and humour that makes you laugh, unfolds in a novel timeline of ‘after the defeat of the Demon King’, and the characters weave a tale that has won over many readers. It has won numerous manga awards, including the Grand Prize of the Manga Grand Prize 2021, the Shinsei Prize of the 25th Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award, the 69th (2023) Shogakukan Manga Award and the 48th Kodansha Manga Award in the Juvenile Division. And the comics currently on sale have sold a total of 24 million copies! It is creating a whirlwind among manga fans.
The TV animation based on it was broadcast from September 2023 to March 2024, gaining a wide range of fans in Japan and abroad and generating a huge response. Now, the long-awaited second season will be broadcast on NTV from January 2026! Freelen's ‘journey to know the human heart’ begins once again.
