It honors the heroes of the 100th Bomb Group

In the cold, blue skies over Europe, a new kind of combat was fought in an environment that had never been experienced before. It was a singular event in the history of warfare. Unprecedented and never to be repeated. Airmen from 40 American bomber groups bled and died in staggering numbers in air combat. One of these groups, hyper-aggressive and undisciplined, suffered so many casualties in such a short period of time it became known as the Bloody Hundredth.
