RIP N99 Hana Chirinu or falling blossoms is a 1938 film directed by Tamizo Ishida. It takes place in 1860s Gion during the infamous Kinmon Incident, in which the rebel Choshu troops tried to capture the capital, which was Kyoto at the time and the center of Japanese geisha culture. Some cultural notes: The film makes several references to a kabuki play about a celebrated folk hero named Ishikawa Goemon who is executed by being boiled alive in Kyoto. The poem Akira reads from is written by Yanagiwara Byakuren, a famous aristocrat and socialite of the late Taisho and early Meiji. The poem reads "As I recall my life look up at the beautiful moon and see that even it has a shadow. So, why should I have any regret for the life I've led?". This is to say '"My life has had ups and downs, but i don't regret anything and i will continue to live my life.". If you know anything about Yanagiwara Byakuren, you know this is a very powerful statement coming from her. This reference when taken into account with the rest of the movie sends a very interesting and powerful message. Originally uploaded by n99 on youtube.
