Geppetto, a lonely woodcarver, creates Pinocchio after losing his son Carlo in a bombing raid. Geppetto's wish is granted by the Wood Sprite, a magical being who gives Pinocchio life. But Pinocchio is not a perfect boy. He is disobedient, impulsive, and easily led astray.
Pinocchio soon befriends the mischievous Lampwick, and the two of them embark on a series of adventures. They are tricked by a fox and cat into going to Pleasure Island, where puppets are free to play and have fun without any rules. But Pinocchio and Lampwick soon discover that Pleasure Island is not all it seems. The boys are transformed into donkeys and forced to work in a circus.
Pinocchio eventually manages to escape from the circus and returns to Geppetto. But the Wood Sprite warns Pinocchio that he must learn to be good and honest, or he will turn back into wood.
Pinocchio tries to be good, but he is constantly tempted by his own desires and the influence of others. He is tricked by a puppet master named Stromboli into performing in his puppet show. And he is lured by the promise of fame and fortune into joining the fascist youth movement.
But Pinocchio eventually realizes that he must follow his own heart and do what is right. He saves Geppetto from the Monstro, a giant sea creature, and sacrifices himself in the process. But the Blue Fairy brings Pinocchio back to life, and he is finally transformed into a real boy.
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a story about the importance of being true to yourself and following your heart. It is a dark and challenging film, but it is also a heartwarming and ultimately hopeful one.
