Babylon is an American film written and directed by Damien Chazelle and released in 2022.
It is a historical drama1 starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva. It tells the story of the success and decline of 6 characters mainly in the film industry during the transition from silent to sound cinema in the late 1920s.
Damien Chazelle began developing the idea for the film fifteen years before its release2, but the writing process took longer than expected. Paramount Pictures subsequently acquired the rights. Shooting takes place in Los Angeles between July and November 2021.
The film polarizes critics. Critics praise the film's photography, editing, music, art direction, actors' performances and themes. More negative critics disapprove of the film's licentious content and excessive running time. The film was a box-office failure, earning just $63 million against a production budget of $80 million. Nevertheless, it received five Golden Globe nominations (winning the Golden Globe for Best Film Score) and three Oscar nominations.
The film sells 1,505,211 tickets in France, which can be considered a success, ranking 18th at the box office. French critics were far more positive than those in the United States.
