Suzume, a 17-year-old living in a sleepy Kyushu town, meets a young man who is traveling and "looking for doors." Suzume follows him to a run-down structure in the mountains where she discovers a door that is standing alone and unaltered, as if "it" alone had been spared from destruction. Suzume reaches out to the door after feeling drawn by an ethereal force. Doors will soon begin opening one after another throughout Japan. To keep a disaster that is on the other side at bay, the doors that were opened must be shut. The skies in the places she wanders through seem to encompass all of the day's hours.
