Fullmetal Alchemist is a popular Japanese manga series that takes place in the fictional country of Amestris, where alchemy is one of the most-practiced sciences. Alchemists have the ability to create almost anything they desire, but must provide something of equal value in accordance with the Law of Equivalent Exchange. Human transmutation is strictly forbidden, as those who attempt it lose a part of their body and are confronted by a pantheistic being called Truth. Attemptees are also thrown into the Gate of Truth, where they receive an overwhelming dose of information. Philosopher's Stones are used to bypass the Law of Equivalent Exchange and create Homunculi, artificial humans embodying the seven deadly sins with unique superhuman abilities. The main setting is Central City, along with other cities and towns such as Briggs, Resembool, Liore, Rush Valley, and Ishbal. Xing is the main foreign country with its own system of alchemy, called alkahestry.
