Yes, the ending is not what fans were expecting but the bittersweet yet hopeful end is actually suited the "realism" theme this anime generated, despite having a thriller/ sub-fantasy genre.
Also, this has one of the best depiction of "going back to the past to change his past regret" and awesome characters cast. Seriously, the villain is so unpredictable, the mystery is good, almost like a detective anime.
