When I was fifteen, I became the candle-lighting attendant in Concubine Shu's palace. Besides always walking ahead to light her way, a candle-lighting attendant also had to guard all the candles in the palace at night, especially the long-burning lamps in each chamber, which could not be extinguished. The back hall I managed was closest to her private chambers, so I could be there instantly if Concubine Shu needed anything at night. Often, she would call me in to light the lamps, then quietly sit with her for half the night. Sometimes, she would ask me some disjointed questions.
