“The Love Handbook” tells the story of Hu Yu, an ordinary college student, and the emotional ups and downs and personal growth he experiences during his university years. A sophomore at Jiangcheng University, Hu Yu is handsome and academically outstanding, yet his family’s poverty forces him to work weekends at the TIKO cake shop to earn living expenses. His campus life had been running like clockwork: studying, holding down a part-time job, and winning scholarships—everything in perfect order. However, with the start of the new semester, his frequent interactions with Liu Ming, the department’s belle, gradually shattered that calm. An accidental encounter in the self-study room led Hu Yu to fall into the illusion that “she likes me,” and Liu Ming’s seemingly intimate gestures only fueled his fantasies. At the same time, Hu Yu unwittingly overheard a conversation between Liu Ming and her close friend, Liu Ying, which revealed Liu Ming’s true motive for getting close to him—to exploit his naivety for personal gain. This discovery left Hu Yu deeply disheartened, but it also prompted him to take a hard look at his own emotional state.
Just as Hu Yu was feeling low, a mysterious tool called the “Love Simulation System” quietly appeared before him. Through this system, he could select any member of the opposite sex for a virtual romantic simulation and receive corresponding emotional feedback and rewards based on his choices. Yet, as the number of simulations increased, Hu Yu gradually realized that genuine love cannot be easily attained through tricks or manipulation; it requires sincerity and courage to face and nurture. Meanwhile, another coworker at the cake shop, Lin Churou, also caught Hu Yu’s attention. Pragmatic and thoughtful, Lin shares a similar outlook on life as Hu Yu, but her presence only leaves him more uncertain: is she, too, just a “target” within the system?
