Finally, it's here! Saturday, March 1st, 2025 was the grand opening and ribbon cutting of New Jersey's newest Round1 Bowling & Arcade! Located at The Mills at Jersey Gardens shopping center in Elizabeth, NJ, a few minutes from the Newark airport and just a couple miles across the river from Manhattan, this Round1 location has been rumored and teased for a long, long time. Personally, I'm pretty happy because this is now super close to me, and it's probably going to become my go-to R1 for all the official Japanese rhythm games (Sound Voltex and Music Diver, here I come!). No more driving an hour and a half just to get to one of these. But how does it stack up compared to others?
First things first, there's no beating around the bush; this is a SMALL location. It's the smallest amount of floor space out of any of the ones in the Northeast, and only four other ones throughout the country have less square footage. Most Round1s have bowling, pool, and karaoke. The Mills at Jersey Gardens has eight lanes of stringpin bowling, three pool tables, and 1 party room that has karaoke -- supposedly, I didn't actually find it when I was walking around, but I'll take a look and ask the next time I visit. Some of the game sections are skimpy, as well; for example, there's no pinball machines at all here. Not that I typically go to R1 because of pinball, but it's nice to have that option. The fighting game section exclusively consists of 2 cabs of Guilty Gear XX Accent Core, and 2 cabs of Super Street Fighter II Turbo. That's it. Not even any SF6: Type Arcade. And the rhythm game section solely consists of current online games, which means a lot of offline favorites from other spots are missing. No Wacca, no Tetote Connect, no Chunithm, no Maimai, no Chrono Circle. Other games that are still online but are missing from the lineup here include Project Diva and Gitadora. And as far as the claw machines go, since this is a New Jersey location, that means we're stuck solely with EClaws
